On this page

The big day might be over, but seasonal sale madness has only just begun as millions of retailers slash their prices for another end-of-year shopping extravaganza.

Whether you’re planning to hit the high street or shop from your sofa, there are plenty of deals to be had, and it can be easy to get swept up in the madness of it all.

With that in mind, here are some top tips to survive festive sale season and avoid overspending:

Make a plan

Going shopping without a plan is a recipe for disaster, especially if you’re on a budget. But with some retailers revealing their prices in the run up to sale day, you can plan ahead and ensure you’re not spending more than planned. From kitchen gadgets to winter clothes, make a list of things you need and where to get them to help you save time, stick to a budget, beat the traffic, and avoid being sidetracked by big red sale signs.

Compare prices

The excitement of a sale can make you rush to buy something before it gets snapped up by a fellow savvy shopper. But there’s nothing worse than later realising you could have got it cheaper elsewhere. Before completing a purchase, search for the item online and use a price-tracking site to ensure you’re getting the best deal. Remember, just because an item is on sale, it doesn’t mean you won’t find it cheaper somewhere else.

Research before you buy

When it comes to bagging a bargain, it pays to be prepared. It might feel like you’re getting a good deal, but some retailers use sales to make room for new arrivals or to get rid of items that are simply not selling. Always research before you buy, even if it’s just a quick online search while you’re standing in the shop.

Set a strict budget

By working out what you can afford before hitting the shops, you can ensure you’re spending within your means and avoid slipping into your overdraft. But what good is a budget if you’re not tracking it? Make a mental note to add up each purchase as you go, and don’t be tempted to spend more if you’ve gone over your limit. You’d be surprised at how just going over by a few pounds can trigger you to keep spending.

Understand return policies

There’s nothing worse than going to return an item and realising you’ve missed the deadline for sending it back. To prevent this, familiarise yourself with the return policy for each purchase and don’t wait too long to check you’re happy with everything you’ve bought. Some retailers also introduce shorter return windows or exchange-only refunds during sales, so don’t assume a store’s returns policy will be the same as it usually is.
